Indonesian filmmaker Timo Tjahjanto (“The Night Comes For Us,” “Nobody 2”) has been confirmed to direct the upcoming film adaptation of the acclaimed Hong Kong-set 2012 open-world action-adventure video game “Sleeping Dogs”.
The game was a GTA-style open-world title set in the city of Hong Kong. In the game, Will Yun Lee voiced the lead role of Wei Shen, an undercover cop in Hong Kong on a mission to take down a powerful criminal organisation – the Sun On Yee Triad.
It was acclaimed for its story, characters, city recreation and combat elements and for years, Asian action legend Donnie Yen tried to get a film adaptation going – even partly self-financing efforts to no avail.
Earlier this year, “Shang Chi” star Simu Liu said he was working with the rights holders on a film adaptation, then confirmed in October a draft of the script for the film is complete.
Now, both Liu and Tjahjanto have confirmed the news on X – Liu making the reveal while currently out there promoting the release of his “The Copenhagen Test” espionage series.
Tjahjanto most recently directed the sequel to David Ayer’s “The Beekeeper,” that Jason Statham-led production wrapping just a few weeks back.
