The furry creations of the “Cats” film adaptation are about to get run over by the two-ton truck that is “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker”.
Tracking services are currently suggesting a $175-200 million U.S. domestic box-office opening for “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” that would put it well below the $248 million and $220 million debut weekends of the last two saga films in the series.
“Cats” meanwhile is tracking for a debuting of around a modest $14-17 million. That’s not necessarily a bad thing as “The Greatest Showman demonstrated in 2017 that Christmas musicals can have long legs if audiences go for them.
Both films, however, are battling poor or mixed reviews and also faces competition from the still in there “Jumanji: The Next Level” and the expanding opening of “Bombshell”.
