Disney and Lucasfilm’s “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” is heading for an estimated opening weekend of $170-200 million in North America alone.
However in China, where “Star Wars” has always proven a weak performer, the film is on course to be the weakest-performing installment of the current batch of films. On Friday, the film earned just $2.2 million according to multiple data tracking services – debuting in fourth place.
That’s far behind Donnie Yen-starring martial arts actioneer “Ip Man 4: The Finale” which made $10.3 million in first place.
Overall estimates for ‘Skywalker’ in China is that the film will earn just $18 million from the Middle Kingdom over its whole lifetime – down from the $126 million of ‘Force Awakens’ and the $42.6 million of ‘Last Jedi’.
