“Skywalker” Editor Ain’t A “Last Jedi” Fan

The editors of both “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” and “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” have stated their opinion of the middle film of the sequel trilogy – “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” – and at least one of them is not a fan.

Mary Jo Markey and Maryann Brandon, speaking on the Light the Fuse podcast, admit that they are not fans of the way Rian Johnson’s film changed things up from its J.J. Abrams-directed predecessor. Markey says: “I couldn’t agree more. It’s very strange to have the second film so consciously undo the storytelling of the first one. I’m sorry that’s what it felt like.”

Brandon says she liked some parts of ‘The Last Jedi’ but then Markey called her out for not telling the truth. Markey also disputes the idea that ‘Rise of Skywalker’ similarly and consciously undoes ‘The Last Jedi’ saying: “I don’t even feel that’s true about the third film. It took where the second film ended and just tried to tell a story. I didn’t feel like it was consciously – it just didn’t feel that way to me.”

However they feel, all the films of the new trilogy remain controversial and will be long debated by fans. The pair remain Abrams’ go to editors for his films and also edited both the acclaimed “The Perks of Being a Wallflower,” the slammed “The Great Wall,” and the recent “Charlie’s Angels” reboot.
