Sky Adds ‘Outdated’ Disclaimer To 16 Films

The U.K. Comcast-backed pay-TV broadcaster Sky has added a new disclaimer to around sixteen films in all, including some highly popular and acclaimed works.

The list includes “Aladdin,” “Aliens,” “Balls of Fury,” “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” “Dumbo,” “Flash Gordon,” “Gone With the Wind,” “The Goonies,” “The Jazz Singer,” “Jungle Book,” “The Last Samurai,” “Lawrence of Arabia,” “The Littlest Rebel,” “The Lone Ranger,” “Trading Places,” and “Tropic Thunder”.

Upon searching for these films on the Sky Cinema service, a description now includes the disclaimer: “This film has outdated attitudes, language and cultural depictions which may cause offence today.”

Each of the films either boasts a white actor acting as someone of another race or ethnicity, or indulges in some outdated racial stereotyping or humor.

The move by Sky follows heightened awareness among broadcasters and platforms about potentially offensive and discriminatory content within their libraries.
