The upcoming thirty-third season of “The Simpsons” will begin with the long-running show’s first full musical episode.
The animated series has long had musical numbers randomly pop up or tie into a story depending upon the episode, but executive producer Matt Selman says the premiere is different as the entire episode has been conceived as a full-blown one.
Titled “The Star of the Backstage,” this includes a special “Frozen” guest start to help add singing chops to a key character:
“The premiere this year is the most musical episode we’ve ever done – almost wall-to-wall music. It’s like a Broadway musical of an episode, with all original songs, and we’ve got Kristen Bell playing the role of Marge’s singing voice. We all love Marge’s voice, but this is the singing voice that’s different, let’s just say.”
Selman was speaking as a part of this year’s SDCC@Home presentation where he also revealed this year’s annual “Treehouse of Horror” episode will contain five segments rather than the usual three. Also this year Moe gets a proper romance, and Homer faces a very Homer-style tragedy.
One of the other big ones though is a two-parter described as an “epic love letter” to “Fargo” and other prestige crime shows. Those episodes also feature a stellar guest line-up including Timothy Olyphant, Christopher Meloni and Brian Cox.
“The Simpsons” Season 33 kicks off on September 26th.
