William Shatner and his Shatner Universe label are teaming with Pure Imagination Studios to develop and produce a “TekWar” adult animated series.

Developed and written by Matt Michnovetz (“24,” “Star Wars: The Clone Wars”), the show is based on Shatner’s series of bestselling future-set detective novels published in 1989.

The novels unfold in the year 2043 as a former Los Angeles detective is framed for the crime of dealing an illegal mind-altering drug (via microchip implant) called ‘Tek’ that creates a simulated reality.

Exonerated after four years, he’s released and employed to solve a series of Tek-related crimes. This project is being conceived as a mixed-reality animated series with viewers able to participate in the show in different forms of technology via mobile, tablets or wearable devices.

Though it can be viewed stand-alone, the level of immersion is enhanced by the ability to become part of the narrative. It’s also seen as the first step in building a “real-time multiverse around a property”.

The book series was previously adapted for TV in the mid-1990s and also become a comic book series and a video game.
