Apple TV+ has cancelled the Charlie Hunnam-led drama series “Shantaram” after one season. The axing comes ahead of the show’s season (now series) finale which is released today (December 16th) on the service.

The project, a screen adaptation of Gregory David Roberts’ 2003 novel, spent years stuck in development (initially as a film with Johnny Depp) before becoming a lavish series shot across two continents and premiering on October 14th.

Hunnam starred as an Australian bank-robbing fugitive named Lin Ford who aims to get lost in vibrant and chaotic Bombay in the 1980s. Alone in an unfamiliar city, he struggles to avoid the trouble he’s running from in this new place.

After falling for an enigmatic and intriguing woman named Karla (Antonia Desplat), Lin must choose between freedom or love and the complications that come with it.

Written and executive produced by showrunner Steve Lightfoot, the series originally began shooting back in 2019 before hitting several stumbling blocks related to the pandemic.

Since its premiere, the twelve-episode series has neither generated critical acclaim or audience buzz in the way some other Apple TV+ productions have.
