“Shang-Chi” actor Michelle Yeoh and director Destin Daniel Cretton will reunite on the fantastical series “American Born Chinese” for 20th Television and Disney.

The genre-hopping action-comedy is adapted from Gene Luen Yang’s graphic novel by Kelvin Yu (“Bob’s Burgers”) who serves as showrunner.

The series focuses on Jin Wang, an average teenager juggling his high school social life with his home life. When he meets a new foreign student on the first day of the school year, even more worlds collide as Jin unwittingly is entangled in a battle of Chinese mythological gods.

Yeoh plays Guanyin, a woman who helps her nephew and Jin’s friend Wei-Chen navigate the challenges of American high school while maintaining her secret identity as the all-powerful Buddhist bodhisattva of Compassion.

Ben Wang, Yeo Yann Yann, Chin Han, Daniel Wu, Sydney Taylor and Ke Huy Quan co-star along with former Taekwondo champion Jim Liu.

Cretton directs and also executive produces alongside Melvin Mar, Jake Kasdan, Erin O’Malley, Asher Goldstein and Gene Luen Yang. Filming begins this month in Los Angeles.
