Hot on the heels of today’s second season release of Netflix’s lavish fantasy drama “Shadow and Bone,” the showrunners are reportedly at work on a “Six of Crows” spin-off series set within the Grishaverse.
EW reports that the project has not yet been greenlit and development will only begin should the viewership numbers of the new season of the series prove successful over its first few weeks of release.
The spin-off would focus on the Crows, a group of mercenaries from the city of Ketterdam who’ve worked their way out of the Dregs to pursue their own goals.
Eric Heisserer served as showrunner for the second season and explains what’s happening with the spin-off:
“One of the reasons, not all of them, that I got the privilege of working with Daegan Fryklind as co-showrunner in season 2 is that I was busy with the writers’ room for Six of Crows. We are ready to launch that as its own story. The eight-episode scripts are phenomenal and I’m really proud of my team for those.
But of course, it’s about how well season 2 numbers do, and if so, then Daegan and I will continue to carry the mantle of both shows…To be able to give [all the actors] their own real estate so they have elbow room allows us to go deeper on some of these character arcs.”
In the main series, the crows are represented by Kaz Brekker (Freddy Carter), Inej Ghafa (Amita Suman) and Jesper Fahey (Kit Young). In the new season they are laying low and on the run after failing to capture Sun Summoner Alina Starklov (Jessi Mei Lee) during the events of the first season.
Their actions in the main show are being made up for television, as opposed to being drawn directly from the Six of Crows books – the spin-off will likely change that.
