Production has kicked off on Tim Burton’s “Beetlejuice” sequel and the first set photos from the U.K. have surfaced online via The Daily Mail showing off a brief glimpse of Winona Ryder in costume.
Ryder reprises her role of Lydia Deetz, returning after three decades since the original released in 1988. She joins “Wednesday” star Jenna Ortega who plays her teenage daughter.
Also back is Michael Keaton as the eponymous bio-exorcist and spook who tormented Lydia’s family in the original. Catherine O’Hara returns as Lydia’s mother whilst Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, and Willem Dafoe also star.
The original followed a deceased married couple (Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis) who call on the services of the obnoxious and mischievous poltergeist to scare away the new residents of their former home. Its success resulted in an animated series, video games, and a stage musical.
The new project has been in development for over three decades, with Burton initially planning to set the sequel in Hawaii. That’s no longer the case, but plot specifics of this new version are under wraps for now.
This marks a return of Burton to feature directing four years after helming Disney’s live-action “Dumbo” adaptation. “Beetlejuice 2” will arrive in cinemas on September 6th 2024.
