September 2023 Box-Office Looking Lean

Whilst “The Nun Part II” should deliver a solid $30 million+ opening at the box-office this weekend, that will be the last big opening for a while – potentially a full month.

According to long-range estimates at Box-Office Pro, all four of the major new releases are looking at domestic opening weekends somewhere in the teens in terms of millions of dollars.

It begins with Kenneth Branagh’s new Poirot film “A Haunting in Venice” which is currently tracking for an $11-16 million start – putting it on par with the last Poirot film “Death on the Nile” which debuted to just over $12 million.

Then, “Expend4bles” aims to open with a $13-18 million opening on the 22nd. That’s followed by Gareth Edwards’ sci-fi feature “The Creator” with a $15-24 million start on 29th.

That’s a busy weekend as both “PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie” and “Saw X” are set to debut with a $10-15 million opening each on the same day.

The GameStop stock short film “Dumb Money” gets a platform release over the month so estimates for it are unclear at this point.

Even “The Exorcist: Believer” won’t shift that much with the site predicting a $18-27 million opening weekend for the horror revival.

It won’t be until the Taylor Swift concert film ‘The Eras Tour’ arriving on October 13th that things will be shaken up with that movie tipped to have a $100 million+ opening weekend.

It was revealed today that film has a SAG-AFTRA interim agreement (via Deadline) and, with Swift on a break from the actual tour at the time, could well be out there promoting it next month.
