Speaking about the 30th anniversary of the movie, filmmaker Henry Selick has teased an idea for a follow-up to his stop-motion animated feature “The Nightmare Before Christmas”.
Boasting a story created by Tim Burton, the original film follows Jack Skellington who is the Pumpkin King of Halloween Town. One day Jack stumbles into Christmas Town and, intrigued by what he saw, tries to incorporate its themes into his own town.
The film was a critical success but only a modest box-office hit, but has garnered a large cult following in the years since and drawn much acclaim for its innovative stop-motion work.
Selick says whilst there are no set plans in place, he has an idea for a potential prequel. However, he tells People magazine it’s ultimately up to Burton to decide:
“I think Tim [Burton] in particular feels like, why mess with that? He certainly doesn’t need to make more money from a sequel.
He has had so many other successes, and so far nobody’s come up with a great idea for a sequel. And I still think that Tim gets to decide. I don’t think there’s any idea that would convince him…
There might be a more interesting story there about how Jack became the King of Halloween Town.”
Chris Sarandon, Catherine O’Hara, William Hickey, Ken Page, Paul Reubens, Glenn Shadix, and Ed Ivory lent their voices to the original film which is available on the Disney+ service.
