Second Unreal Engine 5 Demo Reel

Second Unreal Engine 5 Demo Reel
Epic

A year after the initial reveal, Epic Games has now offered a new look at Unreal Engine 5 and the various groundbreaking tools it will bring to game makers.

Both a short demo video, and a longer 15-minute video largely aimed at developers, show off the new game engine’s tech like Nanite, Lumen and its adaptable animation systems.

One new system revealed today include Temporal Super Resolution – an anti-aliasing variation that offers “quality approaching true native 4K at the cost of 1080p”. There’s also a new World Partition system enabling the creation of expansive worlds with scalable content.

Continuing with the same character seen in last year’s demo, this one titled ‘Valley of the Ancient’ has Echo exploring a detailed desolate rock world where she encounters an elaborate giant mech.

The demo clip runs at 4K and 30 frames per second, but the developers say the engine “is absolutely capable of powering 60 frames per second experiences”. They opted for 30 here to “absolutely maximize visual quality” for the demo.

While last year’s clip ran exclusively on a PS5, this one is running on both a PS5 and Xbox Series X hardware. Early access for game developers for Unreal Engine 5 is now available ahead of the software officially shipping in 2022.

The timing comes as Square Enix announced a number of “Dragon Quest” titles in development this week including the next mainline entry “Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate” which will be developed on Unreal Engine 5.
