“Searching” Sequel Picks Up Steam

Sony-based Stage 6 Films has closed a deal for Will Merrick & Nick Johnson to make their directorial debut on the sequel to the John Cho-led 2018 thriller “Searching” at Screenlife.

The pair served as the editors on the original and Hulu’s Sarah Paulson thriller “Run,” both films were directed by Aneesh Chaganty. Merrick and Johnson are writing the screenplay, based on a story by Sev Ohanian and Chaganty.

The new film, which boasts the same producing team as well, will tell a different story from the original but retain the ‘Screenlife’ format albeit a more ‘evolved’ version with a fresh visual style.

The aim is to start production in the spring. The first film grossed $75 million worldwide on a budget less than $1 million.

At the same time, Chaganty and the film’s producers Natalie Qasabian and Sev Ohanian have also signed up for the sci-fi tech drama series “The Future” at HBO Max.

Based on Dan Frey’s forthcoming novel “The Future Is Yours” and also produced by filmmaker Matt Reeves, the film follows two best friends who invent the most revolutionary technological device in modern human history.

It will be told “through an innovative multimedia style that’s never been seen on TV”. Chaganty will direct.
