“Scream VI” Targets Franchise Record

Paramount Pictures

Early projections for Paramount and Spyglass Media’s “Scream VI” hit tracking sites today and the film is on course to break the franchise’s opening record.

The new entry is reportedly headed for a $37 million opening weekend next month, which would beat the previous highest opening for a “Scream” movie which was “Scream 3” back in 2000 with a $34.7 million stateside debut.

It’s also well above the $30 million opening of the prior film last year. A combination of a change of setting, the solid reception to that film, the rise of the star power of Jenna Ortega, and more are being attributed as potential causes for the rise in opening estimates.

The previous five films have grossed over $744 million worldwide, though the original 1996 film remains the highest-grossing entry to date with $173 million globally.

Radio Silence duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett return as directors in the film set shortly after the latest Ghostface killings. The four survivors – Sam (Melissa Barrera), Tara (Jenna Ortega), Mindy (Jasmin Savoy Brown) and Chad (Mason Gooding) – leave Woodsboro behind and start a fresh chapter in New York City.

However, the big city may end up being less safe when a new killer emerges, and they’re now in a place where people mind their own business and often won’t be there to help. Plus, a masked killer could be anyone – especially in a large urban populous.

Courteney Cox reprises her series-long role of Gail Weathers, whilst Hayden Panettiere is back as Kirby from the fourth film. Dermot Mulroney, Samara Weaving, Tony Revolori, Jack Champion, Liana Liberato, Devyn Nekoda, Josh Segarra and Henry Czerny also star.

“Scream VI” opens in cinemas on March 10th.
