Paramount’s “Scream VI” has beaten all projections and pulled in a franchise-best $44.5 million opening at the domestic box office, and a further $22.6 million from foreign markets for a global debut of $67.1 million.
That figure was easily enough to win Oscar weekend in the U.S. and well ahead of the $30 million opening of the prior entry, and well above the $34.7 million opening of the third film which was the franchise’s best until now.
In addition, the audience of the new R-rated film skewed young with 71% between 18-34 and 42% between 18-24. Radio Silence’s Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett return to direct the film which cost a reported $33 million to make before marketing, follows survivors of last year’s instalment as they leave Woodsboro for New York City.
Coming in second place was Michael B. Jordan’s “Creed III” which snagged a further $27.2 million and a quite respectable 53% decline even with a franchise-best opening last weekend.
The film managed to make it past the $100 million domestic mark in just ten days and finished Sunday with a total of $101.4 million. Overseas this weekend it pulled in a further $24 million and currently stands at $179.4 million worldwide.
Both beat out newcomer “65,” the Adam Driver-led sci-fi feature came in third with $12.3 million. Both critics and audiences were down on the $45 million-budgeted film which earned a bad C+ CinemaScore.
Marvel’s “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” was fourth with a further $7 million. So far it domestically sits at $198 million, whilst its worldwide haul stands at $447.6 million – the title still dropping off more quickly than any previous title in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
“Cocaine Bear” closed out the top five with a further $6.2 million domestically. So far the comedy has snagged $65.7 million globally.
Also opening this weekend was the Woody Harrelson-led feel-good basketball sports comedy “Champions” which came in sixth with $5.2 million.
