“Scott Pilgrim” Anime Is ‘Unbelievably Big’

Netflix

A decade after Edgar Wright’s live-action adaptation of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s cult classic comics “Scott Pilgrim,” much of the cast of that film “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World” are reuniting for the upcoming anime series “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off”.

Michael Cera, Kieran Culkin, Chris Evans, Brie Larson, Anna Kendrick, Brandon Routh, Aubrey Plaza and more are all back for the series, which again focuses on Scott Pilgrim – a slacker and member of the garage band Sex Bob-omb.

O’Malley will serve as showrunner, writer and executive producer along with writer BenDavid Grabinski whilst Wright is an executive producer.

With the show’s shift to animation, courtesy of animation house Science SARU, the series can adapt the story on a scale that wasn’t doable in live-action. Speaking with Empire, Grabinski elaborates:

“There’s an extended fight sequence in Episodes 2 and 3 that, if this was a live-action movie, would cost more than Avatar. It would be so unbelievably big. And you don’t have to think that way. You’re not limited.

If you made a live-action movie of the show that we did, I think it would be the most expensive movie ever, and you’d be shooting for ten years. It would be a total Hearts Of Darkness situation.”

Grabinski adds some of his favourite stuff in the season was not planned at all, ideas that popped up relatively late in the process as they got the hang of the animation being able to let their “imagination to run wild”.

“Scott Pilgrim Takes Off” streams on Netflix from November 17th.
