Scorsese’s “Moon” Has Robust Box-Office Start

Apple Studios, Paramount Pictures

Taylor Swift’s “The Eras Tour” once again topped the box-office this weekend, the film on track to pull in $32 million for the three days – a drop of 66%. By the end of its second weekend, it’s set to have taken in a $130.7 million domestic total.

However, all eyes were on Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” which opened to $23 million – considered a truly excellent start.

The film boasts a 209-minute runtime which limits sessions, opens against the Swift juggernaut which is hogging IMAX and other big screens, and is limited in its ability to be promoted due to the strike.

Despite those challenges, and it being a period movie, it came in right on expectations and nabbed Scorsese not just some of the year’s best critical reviews but the third film he’s released with an A- CinemaScore in audience exit polls.

The only other two to go that high for him have been two of his most acclaimed mainstream popular works – namely “Goodfellas” and “The Departed”. Most of his works hover in the ‘B’ or ‘C’ scores.

“Exorcist: The Believer” is set for third with $5.1 million and a drop of 56%. To date, it has earned $53.7 million domestically. The “Paw Patrol” sequel will be fourth with $5 million, and the “Nightmare Before Christmas” re-release will take fifth with an impressive $4.3 million.
