Saoirse Ronan Was Almost In “Barbie”

Sony Pictures

Filmmaker Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” is one of the most anticipated features of next year, but it’s a film that will arrive without her good luck charm of Irish actress Saoirse Ronan.

The pair made “Lady Bird” and “Little Women” together, and according to Ronan, she was going to have a cameo in “Barbie” until scheduling conflicts got in the way.

Speaking with People, she said her commitments to shoot the drama “The Outrun,” about a recovering alcoholic, meant she was stuck in Scotland whilst Gerwig was shooting in London. Ronan says:

“I was supposed to do a cameo because I live in London and they were [filming] there. There was a whole character I was going to play – another Barbie. I was gutted I couldn’t do it.”

The film stars Margot Robbie as the famed Mattel fashion doll alongside Ryan Gosling as Ken and actors like Ncuti Gatwa, Simu Liu and as other variations of Barbie dolls.

Ronan adds that she hopes she’ll be able to do a cameo one day: “I have texted Margot and Greta, and I’m like, ‘If you’re doing any pick-up [shots], maybe I can just walk through the background?’ ”

Ronan can next be seen in the murder-mystery comedy “See How They Run” which hits cinemas next Friday. She plays a 1950s London police officer who teams up with private detective to solve the murder of a Hollywood director in the West End.

“Barbie” meanwhile is set for a theatrical release on July 21st 2023.
