Filmmaker Sam Raimi is reportedly going to direct a remake of Richard Attenborough’s 1978 killer doll psychological horror film “Magic”.
A young Anthony Hopkins starred in the film as a ventriloquist with severe mental issues who is at the mercy of his vicious, foul-mouthed dummy (and the manifestation of his own id) while he tries to renew a romance with his high school sweetheart.
Speaking with filmmaker Mick Garris on the latest episode of Post Mortem, famed producer Roy Lee (“IT,” “Doctor Sleep,” “Barbarian”) revealed he’s producing a new take on “Magic” and Raimi will helm:
“I’ve only worked with [Sam Raimi] as a producer on films… actually… the first time I’m gonna work with him as a director is on a remake of ‘Magic’. Which is something that we’re working on now. The Anthony Hopkins movie. We’re just actually hearing the final versions of the different takes from writers next week. [Sam] loved the original movie and the book written by William Goldman.”
Raimi most recently directed “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” for Marvel and as a producer has several films on the way, including “Evil Dead Rise,” “65,” and “Boy Kills World”. Lee, who produced this past weekend’s “Don’t Worry Darling,” has “The Mother,” “Salem’s Lot,” “Minecraft” and more on the way.
