One of the biggest selling points of the recent “The Conjuring: Last Rites” was that the film was the final movie in the franchise.
Not only did it mark the last outing for Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga’s Ed and Lorraine Warren, but also seemed to put a bow on the overall ‘The Conjuring Universe’.
That franchise has spanned multiple spin-offs, including three “Annabelle” films, two “The Nun” films, and the four main “The Conjuring” films. Though not officially included, 2019’s “The Curse of La Llorona” is set in that universe too.
Now, franchise producer Peter Safran tells EW that the massive box-office success of ‘Last Rites’ – which made $494 million from a $55 million budget – has made the team seemingly reconsider as they think audiences remain invested in the series:
“I think that Last Rites shows that there is a lot of fuel left in the tank. It was the end of that particular version of the story with Patrick and Vera and that version of The Conjuring. There’s so much more to it that we haven’t dug into.
I think there’s really exciting ways to go with both film and television, frankly. It would be incredibly satisfying. People have been on this journey with us for a dozen years now. I think they want more.
The introduction, in a real way, of Judy and Tony, I think, people love. The feedback we got was they love those characters. So I think that there’ll be more to come.”
Safran did not confirm specific “The Conjuring” spin-off projects at this time, though a TV series is being developed at HBO Max.
