Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners” Is Getting A Sequel?

Warner Bros. Pictures

A new listing over at Production Weekly indicates a sequel is in the works for Ryan Coogler’s critically acclaimed smash hit “Sinners” with the site saying the project is “in development”.

If accurate, it both is and isn’t a surprise. The film was originally pitched as having franchise potential, but Coogler himself told Ebony last month with this film he wanted to get away from “making franchise films for a bit”.

The result was “Sinners” worked just fine on its own: “I wanted the movie to feel like a full meal: your appetizers, starters, entrees and desserts, I wanted all of it there.”

However, success breeds sequel talk. The film remains the best-reviewed wide release of the year, and is up to $341 million worldwide with $270 million of that from U.S. domestic audiences where it was a gargantuan hit.

Coogler is expected back for the sequel, but the filmmaker is busy at present getting to work on his reboot of “The X-Files” franchise along with lining up a potential “Black Panther 3” with Denzel Washington.

Who would return is currently unclear. The film is set to hit digital storefronts next week ahead of a disc release in July.

UPDATE: A Warner Bros. Discovery rep has been in touch and dismissed the report, claiming it “isn’t true”.
