Russos Talk “Extraction 2,” “Gray Man” Plans

Filmmakers Joe and Anthony Russo showed up at the virtual CCXP this weekend where the “Avengers: Endgame” helmers spoke about several upcoming projects they’re involved in.

One of the biggest is ” The Gray Man,” the Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans-led mega-budget spy film. Set to be made through their AGBO production banner, it follows a former CIA operative turned freelance assassin named Court Gentry (Gosling) who is hunted across the globe by his former cohort Lloyd Hansen (Evans).

Speaking with Collider, Joe Russo says they hope this will be the start of a potential franchise and is being conceived as a series of films. As a result, “we’re not gonna answer every question in the movie” even as that film will tell a complete story. As for where it stands now:

“[We’re] guys who grew up on a steady diet of action thrillers. The cast is exceptional, the script is excellent. We start shooting at the end of January here in Los Angeles, and then we have some work overseas in Europe after that in the spring.

We have an incredible team and Netflix has been very supportive. [COVID] hasn’t impacted our location shooting. “his is a big, global spy thriller. Its intent is, it’s gonna hit a lot of different locations, and we’re still gonna film in those locations. So we’re excited about that because it’s really important to the storytelling that we visit these different locations.”

The pair also offered an update on a sequel to “Extraction,” the Netflix action thriller starring Chris Hemsworth which they produced. Intriguingly he says the film would explore some of the side characters we already know:

“We are working at building out a universe of films that could potentially explore some of the other characters from the first movie and some new characters, and see more historical interaction between the characters. So if you’re interested in David Harbour’s character, you just may get to see him in a future Extraction movie.”

Both films are still relatively early along so don’t expect either to arrive until 2022 at the earliest.
