At Star Wars Celebration earlier this year, Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy said that despite reports, Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige was never really attached to a “Star Wars” film project and they had “never discussed an idea”.
That said, it was more than just speculation – Feige has talked about it in the past, Michael Waldron was hired to write the script for the film which Feige would’ve produced.
Now, “Avengers: Endgame” filmmakers Joe and Anthony Russo confirm that not only was Feige working on a “Star Wars” film but they were discussing the possibility of directing it.
Appearing on a recent episode of Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett’s SmartLess podcast, the brothers were asked about future potential directing gigs including the possibility of directing a “Star Wars” film.
The pair revealed they were interested and already had some early discussions with Kevin Feige about it:
“We love ‘Star Wars’. There were early conversations, there were some early conversations with us. Kevin Feige is a huge ‘Star Wars’ fan, and there were some early conversations about maybe teaming up with Kevin to do ‘Star Wars.'”
At this point Feige is too busy to be doing a “Star Wars” film, and whilst it’s not clear how far along in early development it was – the film definitely seems to have been scrapped.
The next three “Star Wars” films already have directors locked in with Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Dave Filoni and James Mangold all set to direct new “Star Wars” film stories set across different time periods. Taika Waititi’s film also seems to have new steam with reports indicating it could film as early as next year.
