Russos On “Avengers” Re-Release, Next Films

“Avengers” and “Captain America” sequel helmers Joe and Anthony Russo are lifelong film fans and have recently been doing some press for the just released Chris Hemsworth-led action film “Extraction” which they produced.

During a chat with Reel Blend, Joe Russo discussed the possibility of their Marvel films being used to draw people back to the movies with a brief re-release to help restart filmgoing ahead of new major releases arriving.

According to Joe Russo, not only are he and his brother onboard with the idea but they would consider it to be a career highlight:

“The theatrical experience is a community experience. Perhaps the most touching moment of our entire careers was a few weeks ago when the lockdown started, and Endgame was trending on social media because everyone was posting videos of opening-night screenings in their theaters with audiences really emotionally connected to the material.

For us, that’s really the strength of the theatrical experience is that it combines audiences, and it combines you globally. To have been a part of movies that did that, on that scale with that level of emotional connection from the audience, was really very touching, and will be the highlight of our careers. So, using those films to get people back into the theaters? We would be ecstatic. I mean, any opportunity for people to go back and share in those stories together is one that we would support.”

As of right now, all major theater chains remain closed with regular operations not expected to resume until July. The Russos also recently told Collider that they already have their next three projects lined up for filming in quick succession over the next 2-3 years.

The pair recently produced the upcoming Tom Holland-led “Cherry,” and are set to produce “Exit West” with Barack and Michelle Obama very soon. They tell the site they’ll announce the specifics of their other new projects when the time is right. They also suggest that at least one of those new films will be an action feature.

Previously they’ve been linked to a new live-action adaptation of “Battle of the Planets” which is in very early development and months way from even a script phase, and both Amazon’s series adaptation of “Grimjack” and Netflix’s animated series “Magic: The Gathering” which are both in scripting phases and also some years off.
