Russo Closes “Extraction” Sequel Deal

The “Extraction” sequel is a go as the film’s writer/producer Joe Russo has closed a deal to write another installment of the action series for their company AGBO.

The project is reportedly coming together fast and optimism is high that both Sam Hargrave will return as director and Chris Hemsworth will reprise as Australian mercenary Tyler Rake, though those deals won’t be made by Netflix until the script is ready.

The film sees Hemsworth’s Tyler Rake, a burned out mercenary whose kid died a few years beforehand, sent on a mission to extract a kid from Dhaka who has become a pawn in the rivalry between two feuding druglords.

The mostly India-shot project was released April 24th on the service and is projected to be Netflix’s most watched feature film ever with the film on track for 90 million watches in its first four weeks. Russo tells Deadline:

“The deal is closed for me to write Extraction 2, and we are in the formative stages of what the story can be. We’re not committing yet to whether that story goes forward, or backward in time. We left a big loose ending that leaves question marks for the audience.

There was always a simple drive to the story, a balletic execution of action where you take a damaged character who made an egregious mistake in the past and has a shot at redemption which might be fatal. What was key is that we needed a muscular action director like Sam to be the main creative force in the execution of the action.”

With the Russo’s having such a great experience with SVOD, could some of their other upcoming fare make the jump as well? They recently directed the Tom Holland-led dark drama “Cherry” which won’t be finished until July, at that point they’ll make a decision on whether it’ll go theatrical or to streaming.
