Dreamworks Animation’s “Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken” is looking to be one of the biggest flops of the year according to Slashfilm.
In its sixth weekend at the box-office, the film reportedly grossed a mere $30,000 domestically and is now sitting at $40.8 million worldwide in total, with $15.6 million of that from the domestic box-office.
As is, it’s the lowest-grossing DreamWorks animation release ever behind “Spirit Untamed” in 2021 which grossed only $42.2 million in part due to its opening around the time the Delta variant of the COVID pandemic was causing a panic.
That film, however, had only a $30 million budget and, with an early digital release, was likely not to have impacted the studio much. “Rbuy Gillman,” on the other hand, clocked in with a production budget of $70 million.
Ruby’s dishonor isn’t unexpected. The film was hit by mixed reviews and debuted in sixth place with Dreamworks’ lowest-ranking three-day opening weekend – tying with “Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas” in 2003.
It wasn’t helped by competition from the more high-profile and better-received “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” and “Elemental”. DreamWorks Animation is coming off a solid run of late with strong box-office for “The Bad Guys” at $250 million and “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” at $484 million.
“Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken” follows a shy teenager who discovers that she’s part of a legendary royal lineage of mythical sea krakens. It is currently available as an early Digital and PVOD rental release.
