Filmmaker S.S. Rajamouli came to worldwide attention in 2022 when his bombastic historical epic “RRR” became a critical darling and global audience sensation, leading to videos of people dancing in cinemas.
Filmmakers like Steven Spielberg, James Gunn and James Cameron all heavily endorsed the movie, which became the first Indian film ever to be nominated for an Oscar.
Now he’s back with “Varanasi,” a globe-trotting adventure being dubbed the most expensive Indian film ever made with the first details and material from the film released today.
Mahesh Babu, Chatrapathi Sekhar, and Priyanka Chopra Jonas star in the film, which has been shooting for almost a year, with production set to continue into 2026 and all the cast under tight NDAs.
A nearly four-minute CG-heavy concept trailer and various character posters from the film were released today and it looks to be exactly as wild and bombastic as you expect. Additionally, it has been confirmed that the project has been filmed for IMAX.
Plans are to reportedly release the epic as two three-hour movies in 2027.
