Almost fifty years on from its theatrical release, a lost director’s cut of George A. Romero’s 1977 cult classic vampire film “Martin” has reportedly been unearthed.
The original film follows a strange, young man (John Amplas) who believes himself to be a nearly century-old vampire and moves to a small town in Pennsylvania to find a way to control his urges.
Michael Gornick, who served as director of photography on the film and Romero’s iconic “Dawn of the Dead,” shared a social media post on the weekend with a picture of a film reel with a black-and-white 16mm ‘director’s cut’ of “Martin”.
He says this cut runs around 210 minutes in length (more than double the theatrical cut’s 95-minute runtime) and was “always Romero’s preferred version”. He then says: “may it soon return safely to the custody of Richard Rubinstein and Braddock Associates for digital revitalization and distribution to the world.”
The original theatrical film is getting a 4K restoration by Second Sight for an early 2022 release.
