The world premiere of “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” took place in Los Angeles last night. Full reviews won’t go online until Tuesday morning, but non-spoilery social media reaction to the film is already flooding in.
The verdict is nothing short of spectacular with raves across the board. Almost everyone seems genuinely shocked at how good it turns out, teases many real surprises and a killer third act, and confirm the film’s very gritty tone. Many indicate it’s not just a better film than ‘The Force Awakens,’ it also feels more like a genuine “Star Wars” film.
Here’s a roundup of some reactions. The film opens in cinemas later this week:
Rogue One > Force Awakens IMO

ROGUE ONE = excellent. People around me saying even better than THE FORCE AWAKENS. Congrats Disney/Lucasfilm/amazing talent involved.

Takes a bit to get going but #RogueOne turns out to be a kick-ass action pic. And it nails the ending.

People worried about #RogueOne not being a gritty war film need not worry. It's intense, relentless. You can practically taste the grit.

I had high hopes. It exceeded them.

All I will say for now is that I enjoyed #RogueOne more than #TheForceAwakens. For what that's worth… #StarWars
— Scott Mendelson (@ScottMendelson) December 11, 2016
More seriously, #RogueOne was well executed and Star Wars down to its bones. I loved it.

Slightly longer #RogueOne spoiler-free review: heart-stopping and dark. Like darker than Empire Strikes Back dark.
— Chris Taylor (@FutureBoy) December 11, 2016
I expected it to be funny. I didn't expect to be choked up. Moments of true bravery, and some speeches we need right now. #RogueOne

One of the best things about Rogue One are the new characters. They're so well done and expand the universe. You care about all of them.

#RogueOne is FANTASTIC. Incredible action, both planetary and interstellar, and looks GORGEOUS. Most importantly, it feels like Star Wars.

With all the talk of reshoots and production problems the final cut of Rogue One is worth the wait. Man that 3rd act….so so good.
— Steven Weintraub (@colliderfrosty) December 11, 2016
Real talk though, #RogueOne has probably 4 of my 5 favorite #StarWars scenes of all time #RogueOnepremiere

Holy crap did I love Rogue One. It’s gonna take days to wipe the smile off my face. So many surprises and so much fun. Get excited.

Theres an amazing amount of footage/dialogue in the #RogueOne trailers and marketing that are not in the film, including Troopers in water.
— Peter Sciretta (@slashfilm) December 11, 2016
So @JayneLyons and I just watched all the trailers and teasers for #RogueOne . Without exaggeration, 50% of it or more isn't in the movie.
— Germain Lussier (@GermainLussier) December 11, 2016
The last time I loved a Star Wars movie as much as I loved #RogueOne, it was 1977.
