The recent “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” not only scored the worst reviews of the franchise, it turns out it wasn’t exactly a big profit generator either.
A new piece at Deadline about the true value of various blockbusters has revealed that “Rise of Skywalker” yielded a net profit for Disney of around $300 million. Sounds like a lot, but it pales compared to the net profits of “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” ($319.6M), “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” ($417.5M), and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” ($780.1M).
It’s also lower than Sony’s “Spider-Man: Far From Home” which made a net profit of $339 million from a $1.13 billion worldwide gross, making it Sony’s most successful film ever. ‘Skywalker’ by comparison made $1.074 billion in box-office, but cost $275 million just in production budget alone and had total global costs of $627 million.
Despite the numbers, it isn’t the worst performing “Star Wars” film – that was “Solo: A Star Wars Story” which lost $77 million for Disney.
