“Rogue One” Lenser On His Favorite Shot

Lucasfilm

Whilst filmmaker Gareth Edwards has been doing the lion’s share of promotion for the sci-fi feature “The Creator,” the movie’s cinematographer Greig Fraser has recently talked about the work he put into the lavish-looking film.

Talking with Variety, Edwards also reflected on his prior work with Edwards on Lucasfilm’s “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story”. Whilst he wouldn’t go into details about the behind-the-scenes shenanigans on that film, he did speak about his favorite shot of the movie.

Specifically, it’s part of the sequence where Director Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn) pays a visit to Darth Vader (voiced by James Earl Jones) on Mustafar in order to discuss the Death Star. Fraser says:

“There are some things that I’ve been able to do visually, and that was cool. I got to take an iconic character and put him into an iconic situation and create that.”

He also spoke about shooting the film’s finale sequence with Darth Vader which was shot three months before the release and said it had changed from what had originally been shot:

“I was about to start on ‘Mary Magdalene’ with Garth Davis’ and I got a call about a new ending. I went, ‘Are you kidding? But, I have to say, we shot a great ending.’

I was so enamored to be privy to that scene. To be able to lens that, I think is an essential Darth Vader scene in the entire canon, not just for the film. It’s a very important moment for that character. To get to properly record his venom was cool.”

Fraiser other recent credits include “The Batman” and Denis Villeneuve’s two “Dune” films. Earlier work includes “Lion,” “Zero Dark Thirty,” “Foxcatcher,” “Bright Star,” “Killing Them Softly,” “Let Me In” and “Snow White and the Huntsman”.
