Seth Rogen confirms that a sequel to the stoner comedy “Pineapple Express” was in the works years ago, but was shot down over budgetary concerns at Sony Pictures.
An infamous hack in 2014 saw many confidential documents and emails about unannounced movies at Sony released and several years later a report at The Daily Beast emerged that there was a disagreement over budget for a potential “Pineapple Express” sequel. Producer Judd Apatow reportedly wanted $50 million, Sony would only offer $45 million.
Things stalled there. In an interview on SiriusXM’s “The Howard Stern Show” on Wednesday, Rogen said Sony was no longer interested:
“We tried to make one and thanks to the Sony hack you can actually find the email when Sony decided to kill the movie and not make it. It was something we were very open to several years ago, but Sony was not that interested in it. I think we probably wanted too much money. Studios, they don’t like giving away money. Weird thing.”
“Pineapple Express” grossed just over $100 million worldwide against a budget of $27 million. Rogen will be seen later this week in HBO Max’s comedy “An American Pickle”.
