In an unexpected but interesting teaming, celebrated filmmaker Luca Guadagnino (“Call Me By Your Name,” “A Bigger Splash”) is joining forces with “The Boys” and “Preacher” writer/producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg for a story about a marine turned hustler who arranged hookups for post-war Hollywood’s closeted stars.
Searchlight is backing the project, a narrative feature remake of Matt Tyrnauer’s documentary “Scotty and the Secret History of Hollywood” which itself is based on Scotty Bowers’ tell all memoir “Full Service”.
Bowers was a WW2 marine combat veteran who fought at the Battle of Iwo Jima. He then became a legendary bisexual male hustler and date-arranger for gay Hollywood stars from the 1940s through until the beginning of the AIDS epidemic in the 1980s.
Bowers arranged said liaisons from a gas station near the Hollywood studios. He created a safe environment for showbiz gay men to hook up in secret in a culture that otherwise would have made it a dangerous and possibly lethal pursuit. Dylan McDermott’s character in Netflix’s recent “Hollywood” series is based on Bowers.
Rogen and Goldberg will write the script and Guadagnino will direct the film. Tyrnauer and Corey Reeser will produce. Guadagnino recently directed HBO’s new mini-series “We Are Who We Are” and is slated to direct new adaptations of both “Scarface” and “The Lord of the Flies”.
