Hot on the heels of raves for his work on the most recent episode of “The Mandalorian” on Disney+, filmmaker Robert Rodriguez and his writer-director sister Rebecca Rodriguez (“Snowpiercer,” “The Chi”) are developing a contemporary gender swapped take on the classic masked vigilante character Zorro.
The new take centers on Sola Dominguez, an underground artist who fights for social injustice as contemporary version of the mythical Zorro. Her life is threatened by several criminal organizations after she exposes them.
Both Rodriguez’s will pen the series with Rebecca helming. “Modern Family” star Sofia Vergara leads a team of executive producers including Ben Siverman, Rodney Ferrell, Howard T. Owens, Greg Lipstone, Luis Balaguer, Jay Weisleder, Geoff Clark, Eric Bromberg and John Gertz.
The project has been setup at CBS Studios and Universal TV. Over two decades ago Rodriguez was attached to direct the critically acclaimed “The Mask of Zorro” and cast Antonio Banderas as the title role before leaving the feature with Martin Campbell (“Goldeneye,” “Casino Royale”) taking over.
