He’s done witches (“The Witch”), Eldritch horrors (“The Lighthouse”), Vikings (“The Northman”) and vampires (“Nosferatu”), and now filmmaker Robert Eggers is bringing his visually stylish bag to werewolves.
THR reports that Robert Eggers has co-written “Werwulf” with Sjón, and plans to direct the lycanthropy tale as his next feature.
Focus Features, who released “Nosferatu” this past Christmas, will reunite with him to handle distribution, and the film has already set a Christmas Day 2026 release.
Those involved are likely hoping to see success similar to what they had with “Nosferatu”, which has become the director’s highest-grossing film and has made $156.3 million off a $50 million budget to date. The director’s work has generally had consistently good reviews with plenty of acclaim for his visual style and atmosphere.
Details of the new are under wraps, but the story is set to unfold in 13th century England and reportedly features dialogue that was true to the time period. It will also have translations and annotations as it uses Old English for the dialogue.
Robert Eggers’ “Werwulf” was also originally planned to be shot in black and white, but that is no longer the case. Eggers, Sjón, Chris and Eleanor Columbus will produce.
Eggers also spoke with Comicbook.com about the reports that he was setting up a remake of the iconic muppet fantasy film “Labyrinth”. Eggers told the outlet:
“The thing is, I always have a ton of things in development because you need to survive this industry and you don’t know what is going to hit next. But I definitely want the next film I make to be an original movie.”
Specific production dates on when “Werwulf” will shoot haven’t been revealed at this time, though with that release date it’s likely to go before cameras before the year is out.
