Jharrel Jerome (“Moonlight,” “When They See Us”) will play the lead in “Sorry to Bother You” writer-director Boots Riley’s new TV series for Media Res (“The Morning Show”).
Riley announced the project today saying the story deals with “a 13-ft tall Black man who lives in Oakland” and will go by the name “I’m A Virgo”. The Bay Area-set show’s tone is said to be “dark, absurd, hilarious, and important”.
A network/streamer has not yet been settled on. Riley’s “Sorry to Bother You” scored rave reviews upon release and ultimately made bank – pulling in $18.3 million off a $3.2 million budget.
Meanwhile Lionsgate has acquired Stephen Herman’s horror spec script “The Culling” for helmer David F. Sandberg (“Shazam!,” “Annabelle: Creation”) to direct. Sandberg & Lotta Losten will produce.
The story follows a troubled priest confines himself to a remote cabin in the middle of the woods where he attempts to make a last stand against the demon that terrorized his family when he was a child.
Finally David Bruckner (“The Night House”) has written and developed “V/H/S 94,” a reboot of the horror anthology franchise, and will produce alongside Bloody Disgusting’s Brad Miska and Tom Owen.
Filmmaking trio Radio Silence (“Ready or Not”) will also produce. Simon Barrett, Timo Tjahjanto and Chloe Okuno will also contribute to the project which will be the first to be “presented in a single, fluid narrative, with each section linked up.”
