Following on from his comments about how proud he still is about “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” filmmaker Rian Johnson has followed that up with comments to Empire confirming his other “Star Wars” project is still alive.
Several years back, the filmmaker announced plans to do a new “Star Wars” trilogy, one not connected to the Skywalker Saga and potentially set in a quite different time period.
Since then however there’s been essentially radio silence. With the lack of commentary on it along with the ever-shifting plans for the franchise at Lucasfilm, it was thought the plans had been quietly abandoned.
Not so says Johnson who confirms that the plan is for them to still happen, eventually:
“I’ve stayed close to Kathleen [Kennedy] and we get together often and talk about it. It’s just at this point a matter of schedule and when it can happen. It would break my heart if I were finished, if I couldn’t get back in that sandbox at some point.”
It will be at least some time as Johnson is committed to the two “Knives Out” sequels, but despite an obvious desire it’s not clear what plans Lucasfilm has for the franchise’s movies right now and a whole new trilogy is a long way off.
