Rian Johnson’s “Star Wars” Trilogy Lives On

Nearly four years ago came the announcement that filmmaker Rian Johnson was working on a whole new trilogy of films set in the “Star Wars” universe. That was one of two trilogies in the works, the other being one from “Game of Thrones” showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.

Then it all went to hell. Johnson’s “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” came out, the fanbase turned divided, then toxic. “Solo” went ignored at the box-office, “Rise of the Skywalker” had numerous problems to deal with and limped to its finish, and Benioff and Weiss signed up for a Netflix deal and shortly after exited any “Star Wars” project development.

Johnson’s trilogy was seemingly in limbo, something that seemed confirmed in December last year when the Disney Investor Day announced a whole slate of “Star Wars” projects, including a new Patty Jenkins-directed film, and Johnson or his trilogy weren’t involved.

That said, both Taika Waititi and Kevin Feige are working on “Star Wars” films projects which weren’t announced either. Now in a recent interview with USA Today’s Sariah Wilson, Johnson has confirmed that his trilogy is still moving forward at Lucasfilm.

He does advise that the project currently has no dates or timelines attached to it due to his schedule with other projects like the “Knives Out” sequel. No further details on what the trilogy is about were revealed either.
