Rian Johnson Reflects On “Star Wars” Prequels

If you ask some “Star Wars” fans, the worst things about the franchise are George Lucas’ prequels and Rian Johnson’s “Star Wars: The Last Jedi”. To others, they’re some of the best things about it.

Recently Johnson offered some serious respect towards what Lucas aimed for with the prequels, indicating he doesn’t dismiss them in the way some fans do. Asked to “say a genuinely nice thing” about the prequel trilogy, Johnson responded on Twitter:

“Lucas made a gorgeous 7 hour long movie for children about how entitlement and fear of loss turns good people into fascists, and did it while spearheading nearly every technical sea change in modern filmmaking of the past 30 years.”

Combined, the three prequels earned over $2.4 billion at the global box-office even as the first prequel “Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace” scored the worst reviews of the live-action films and held onto that title until the arrival of last year’s “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker”.
