Rian Johnson Open To “Star Wars” TV Series

Filmmaker Rian Johnson just launched the “Knives Out” sequel “Glass Onion” in cinemas, is finishing up his Peacock mystery series “Poker Face,” and is writing a third “Knives Out” which aims to begin shooting early next year.

He’s a busy man post-“Star Wars: The Last Jedi” which is partly why he’s not really made any progress on his previously announced and planned film trilogy of “Star Wars” movies that will revolve around new characters.

In the wake of that trilogy reveal a few years back, the “Star Wars” franchise has changed. With no new theatrical releases in three years, fans have turned primarily to streaming services to get their fix. That’s a sandbox that Johnson tells THR he’d be happy to play in:

“I would do a Star Wars anything. And if I had an idea that I was excited about, that worked better as a show than a movie, I’d do it that way.

At the moment, we’re in between making the next Benoit Blanc movie and thinking about Poker Face. I keep getting together with Kathy [Kennedy] and having conversations.

Who knows? Making The Last Jedi was the best experience in my life, so I should be so lucky.”

That does beg the question – could Lucasfilm retool Johnson’s film plans into a series? Time will tell. For now, with “Star Wars” having wrapped “Andor,” eyes turn towards the third season of “The Mandalorian” which arrives in February.
