The “Magnum P.I.” revival has been cancelled…again.
A year ago came the news that the Jay Hernandez-led reboot had been picked up by NBC nearly two months after its cancellation by CBS after four seasons.
At the time, NBC ordered twenty new episodes, split across two new seasons of ten episodes each, with an option for more.
Now the network has opted not to order those additional episodes and has cancelled the series as the options on the cast are up next week which forced the issue.
Ten of the twenty episodes ordered have aired so far, and NBC is expected to run a major campaign for the remaining ten episodes – promoting them as the show’s final run.
Whilst Universal Television found a new home for the series with NBC, the same scenario isn’t likely to happen again. Not helping is the show’s streaming rights are complicated with previous seasons on Paramount+ and the most recent season on Peacock.
The show continues to enjoy a strong fan following and ratings with viewership said to be on par with some of the NBC scripted series that were renewed for next season.
Perdita Weeks, Zachary Knighton, Stephen Hill, Tim Kang and Amy Hill also star in the series from showrunner Eric Guggenheim. Justin Lin, John Davis and John Fox are executive producers.
