“Return of the Living Dead” Gets A Reboot

Lorimar Motion Pictures

Dan O’Bannon’s 1985 horror comedy franchise “The Return of the Living Dead” is scoring a reboot with the production company Living Dead Media handling the new take.

Steve Wolsh (“Muck,” “Kill Her Goats”) will direct the project, which is being dubbed a ‘reboot’ as opposed to a remake, with the company saying the plan is to “expand the existing world created by the original five films”.

However the intent is also to stay true to the R-rated sci-fi/horror/dark comedy roots of the cult classic whilst hopefully bringing in “new generations of zombie fans”.

Though George A. Romero’s completely separate ‘Living Dead’ franchise is its own thing, the original “The Return of the Living Dead” came out at a time when horror-comedy was rare – especially of the self-aware and reference heavy type.

Subsequently, entries in more well-known franchises like “Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives” in 1986 and “Evil Dead II” in 1987 helped make horror-comedy a more established sub-genre of its own.

There’s no release window or date for “The Return of the Living Dead” at yet. The original film is available to stream on Tubi.
