Production has officially begun on the “Chip n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers” movie which hails from The Lonely Island team.

Akiva Schaffer (“Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping”) helms the live-action/CG animated hybrid feature (ala “Alvin and the Chipmunks”) based on the classic 1990s animated series about two chipmunks, a pair of mice, and a bug formed a detective agency to solve crimes.

John Mulaney and Andy Samberg play the title characters in the film which is said to serve as a ‘meta’ take on the property. “How I Met Your Mother” writing duo Dan Gregor and Doug Mand penned the script, while Larry Fong (“300,” “Kong: Skull Island,” “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice”) serves as cinematographer.

“Chip n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers” is targeting a 2022 release.
