“Rental,” “Monsoon,” “Sanctuary” Set For U.S.

IFC Films has announced that it has acquired the U.S. rights to actor Dave Franco’s directorial debut “The Rental” starring Alison Brie, Dan Stevens, Jeremy Allen White, Sheila Vand and Toby Huss. IFC Films has set the film for a July 24th nationwide release.

Co-written by Franco and Joe Swanberg (“You’re Next”), the film follows two couples as they embark on a weekend getaway to a seemingly perfect house they’ve booked online, but what begins as a celebratory weekend for the four close friends turns into something far more sinister as secrets they’ve kept from each other are exposed and they realize they may not be alone.

That’s not the only acquisition today. Strand Releasing has snagged all North American rights to British-Cambodian filmmaker Hong Khaou’s “Monsoon”. Henry Golding plays a young British man of Vietnamese decent who returns to Saigon to scatter his mother’s ashes. On the way he falls in love with an American man (Parker Sawyers), whose father fought in the Vietnam War.

Next, Amazon Prime Video has secured global SVOD rights to the Javier Bardem-led documentary “Sanctuary” in which Javier and his brother Carlos Bardem head to the Antarctic to witness marine ecological devastation at first hand. Amazon will release the film, helmed by award-winning director Alvaro Longoria, this Friday.

Finally, Saban Films has acquired the Daniel Roby-directed crime-thriller “Most Wanted” starring Josh Hartnett, Antoine Olivier Pilon and Jim Gaffigan. Hartnett plays an investigative journalist as he unravels a twisted case of entrapment wherein a guy from the wrong side of the tracks is forced into a dangerous drug deal against his will and is sentenced to a century in Thai prison.
