Actors Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser have reportedly closed deals to lead a “Yellowstone” spinoff series to take the place of the main series which ends this coming weekend.
The pair will be reprising their roles as Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler, respectively, in the show with creator Taylor Sheridan working on the creative for the new series.
Other cast members from the mothership series alongside Reilly and Hauser are expected back as well with the series to stay in the same present-day time frame.
The new title will retain Yellowstone in its title but go by a different name. Rather than just calling it “Yellowstone” Season 6, the main reason for this becoming a whole new series is about ownership.
Namely it allows Paramount Network’s parent Paramount Global to keep the show within the company’s ecosystem (ie. Paramount+), unlike the main “Yellowstone” series which has a pre-existing exclusive streaming deal with Peacock.
The current back half of the fifth season has been a ratings juggernaut with the fourth episode of the new run, which included a high-profile death, hitting a season high of 12.1 million viewers.
The project is separate from the franchise’s first contemporary spinoff “The Madison”. That stars Michelle Pfeiffer and will follow after the current final run of “Yellowstone” and before its successor series.
