“Watchmen” star and “One Night in Miami” director Regina King has scored the role of pioneering politician Shirley Chisholm in John Ridley’s new feature “Shirley” at Participant.
The story tracks the boundary-breaking presidential campaign launched in 1972 by Chisholm, America’s first Black congresswoman, and her efforts to garner enough delegates to speak at the Democratic Convention.
The project reportedly has an exclusive agreement with the Chisholm Estate, giving them access to her life story rights. King will also produce while Ridley will write and direct the film which is expected to begin shooting later this year.
Uzo Aduba played Chisolm recently in FX’s “Mrs. America” series while Danai Gurira is attached to play her in the biopic “The Fighting Shirley Chisholm”.
