At one time, “Fantastic Beasts” star Eddie Redmayne and “Fifty Shades of Grey” leading man Jamie Dornan were roommates.
Both were also struggling actors at the time and recently, whilst speaking with Variety, Redmayne revealed that both auditioned for the same role in Gore Verbinski’s ultimately cancelled film adaptation of the “BioShock” video game series.
Redmayne says the pair of them, and Andrew Garfield, were texting trying to remember the roles they went for: “and one of them was BioShock. You remember BioShock? We were furious with each other as we were going through it, and competing for the same role.”
The original game follows an aeroplane crash survivor who discovers the underwater city of Rapture – a planned and now decaying scientific utopia following the discovery of a genetic material which can be used to grant superhuman powers.
Famed for its stunning design and visuals along with relatively complicated plotting and rich themes, plans were for Verbinski to shoot the film ahead of a 2011 release. However, the project was cancelled in 2009, around the time they auditioned, due to budget issues.
Redmayne also revealed he auditioned for Roland Emmerich’s “10,000 B.C.” at one point, that film did get made with “The Expanse” star Steven Strait in the lead role.
