Xbox’s “Starfield” is engaging preview players and so far has been met with a very good reception ahead of wide release, a welcome change from the company’s other big game exclusive from earlier this year – “Redfall”.
Bethesda’s vampire-themed, co-op play, open-world looter/shooter was plagued by a number of technical issues along with plenty of poor reviews, so much so that Microsoft’s head of gaming and Xbox chief Phil Spencer offered a public apology over the game’s launch state.
Out promoting “Starfield,” Bethesda’s head of publishing Pete Hines spoke to GamesIndustry.biz and says the company is sticking with “Redfall” in the hopes of turning it into “a good game”.
At the very least, Hines says Bethesda won’t just leave it to fail:
“We don’t like failing to meet our players’ expectations. At the same time, we are the same company that has had launches that didn’t go the way we wanted, and we don’t quit or abandon stuff just because it didn’t start right.
The Elder Scrolls Online’s PC launch was not flawless, but we stuck with it. Now it’s like this insanely popular multiplatform. It’s the same with Fallout 76. Redfall is no different for us. Okay, we didn’t get the start we wanted, but it’s still a fun game, and we’re going to keep working on it. We’re going to do 60 frames per second.
We’re going to get it to be a good game because we know, as a first-party studio, Game Pass lives forever. There will be people ten years from now who are going to join Game Pass, and Redfall will be there.”
Also living there forever will be the “Redfall” Metacritic scores which stand at 56 (Xbox Series X/S) and 53 (PC) along with user scores of 3.4 and 2.2 respectively.
On Steam it reached an all-time peak of just 6,124 players back around launch. These days the title hit a low of just 7 concurrent players earlier today according to SteamDB.
Thankfully for Bethesda, “Starfield” is facing a better reception with an 86 (Xbox Series X/S) and 88 (PC) Metacritic score. That game also reached over 230,000 players in the first two hours of early access on Steam.
